This is just the quality tube collectors look for. This example also includes the heavy, lead glass protective bowl.  The lead glass shielded some of the X-rays.   The bowl is mounted to the original cast iron frame with hard-to-find wood tube clamps. These tubes are very showy and display nicely.

A brief summary from the above site:  Those X-rays taken from 1896 were 1500 times more powerful than those of today. The patient was exposed to 75 times the recommended annual dose for a normal person today. Our X-rays are sharper and more focused though the pics from 1896 weren't bad.
