    Onstreet Parking Program introduced the first Charlotte Coin in January 1999 as the validation tool for the new
    Park Center City
    program.
    The 1999 Charlotte Coin commemorates Charlotte's history of minting gold coins. Coins minted in Charlotte are among the world's most valuable. The Charlotte U. S. Branch Mint was established in 1838 and produced limited issues of , .50 and gold coins bearing a C mint mark to identify their origin.  Coins were minted in Charlotte until North Carolina seceded from the Union on May 21, 1861, and the Confederacy seized the Mint.
    The Charlotte Department of Transportation and Park It sponsored a competition to design the 1999 Charlotte Coin. The competition was open to all Central Piedmont Community College graphic arts students. The first prize winner, J. Susan Brown, was presented with a 0 scholarship and the honor of having her hand-drawn design of Charlotte's skyline minted on the 1999 Charlotte Coin. The runner-up design was created by Laura Sparks, who received a 0 scholarship. Penny Ross and Carl Okugo both were awarded honorable mention scholarships of 0.
    The special collector's edition of the 1999 Charlotte Coin in a commemorative gift casing is sold out and no longer available for purchase.
