Description
Here is a pair of antique medical or dental instruments, the larger one (I have recently been told) is called a rongeur and was used to nip pieces of bone. It is about 7 1/2” long and has a spring that encourages the jaws to stay in an open position. The jaws are almost like two scoops with sharp edges around them, not serrated but smooth. The scoops come together pretty accurately. It has a maker name that is partially blurred but I can make out the name Hernstein, New York. It also has the name Molt stamped into it which may have been a previous owner as it is also stamped into the other tool. The other smaller tool measures about 4 1/2” long and has a patent date of February 21st, 1911 and the name Detlenk, as well as the name Molt, which may be a former owner. The angle of the instrument looks like it may be designed to fit into a body cavity. There is a cam movement operated by three fingers. I have been told that this is used for removing small bits of soft tissue for purposes of biopsy. See photos for condition and ask any questions you may have.
