    Description

From my Medical Collection:  Here we have an
Antique JOHN WEISS, LONDON Medical Surgeon's Bone Amputation Saw with Gutta Percha Handle.
John Weiss & Son were London-based surgical instrument makers during the 1700s and 1800s. The company was founded in 1787 by John Weiss, an Austrian, whose skill as master cutler and instrument maker were soon widely acknowledged. The makers name and address are molded into the gutta-percha handle.
    W
e can tell that this instrument is from the pre-sterilization period (before approx. 1895) as evident by the use of natural materials (wood) and the lack of totally smooth surfaces in the design of the instrument. M
edical instruments still had handles made of ebony, rosewood, bone, or gutta-percha (a hard rubber).
This molded gutta-percha handle has textured sides and heavily ridged edges to make it less slippery to use. (see pics).
The blade is in EXCELLENT condition with handle any wear and with original clean surfaces.  Both the spine and the blade are nice and straight.  The blade is not missing any teeth and is still sharp.   I believe that the spline may be nickel-plated and is also in Excellent condition. The saw is approx. 13-3/4" long.  These saws were usually found included in
    'Capital' Surgical Sets
, which had a large compliment of instruments and used in the very rear area of a battle region or in a hospital (large fine mahogany crafted cases with specific spaces for each instrument).  This is a
    Maker
identified saw that will help you complete your Capital Set or complete your
    WEISS
collection !!  It is very had to find a saw of this age in this EXCELLENT condition !!
