    Description

    From my Collection:
    Here we have an
Antique Unmarked Surgeon's Small Traveling TROCAR w/ Checkered Ebony Handle
    .
There is no maker mark on this scalpel.
This instrument was manufactured in the "pre-sterilization era" when medical instruments still had handles made of ebony, rosewood, or bone.
This is an instrument used to drain an abscess, a bladder, etc..
The surgeon would have added a sliding hollow tube over the metal shaft and then use the
3-sided spear point to pierce the abscess, and then slide the hollow tube into the hole while removing the handled instrument.  The very small size of this instrument indicates that it was probably carried in a Doctor bag to a patient's house.
The blade is in good condition with some minor corrosion marks.  The
    ebony
handle has no cracks or chips. The instrument is 4
