Antique Tiemann Student's Post Mortem Dissection Medical Kit 1864-1886

George Tiemann was one of the major suppliers of surgical sets and instruments during the Civil War. This set was manufactured somewhere between 1863/64-1871 (some sources say Tiemann was there until 1886). The interior label states: G. TIEMANN & Co, MANUFACTURERS OF SURGICAL INSTRUMENTS, 67 CHATHAM ST N.Y.
Initially posted as a Civil War Surgeon's Medical Field Kit as this was what I was told when I obtained it. I have since been told that this is a student's post mortem dissection set. Thank you to the ebayers that let me know about this, you know who you are :)
A few of the instruments in this case were made either before or during the civil war as shown by the stamp. Instruments marked Thiemann would date it being made prior to the Civil War, post- war instruments are marked Thiemann & Co. The wooden case and creation of the set would put it somewhere between 1864-1886.
The knife and saw blade are uniquely constructed so that they may be attached and detached through a threaded handle. Beautifully constructed ebony wood handle that tightens the inserted blade into place with a brass screw at the end of the handle. The chisel, saw blade, knife blade, and tenaculum are all Tienmann marked instruments - See photos. It is unclear if the clamp and tweezers in this set are original issue. The clamp looks like it is made by Grange - See Photo. Sold as is.
Mahogany case is 8” long, 4” wide, 1 ½” high. . Red Velvet lining.
The case has a few scratches, see photos.
