Description

I am selling (1) Antique Goldstein’s Uterine Curette with Irrigation used in Gynecological or Obstetric Surgery.
It is 12 inches long
It is marked only with a “3” to indicate that it is a Size 3 or Full Size Goldstein’s Uterine Curette.
It doesn’t include a manufacturers marking. But I found a similar item in KNY-Scheerer Company New York’s 1915 catalogue of Gynecologic Instruments (See item E-3177 on catalogue page in my pictures [not included with item])
It is in generally good used condition. It scratches, surface chipping, and wear common for surgical instruments of this age. No rusting is visible (See photos)
According to Dr Howard A. Kelly’s Operative Gynecology (1905):
“Curettes are used to remove the superficial portions of the uterine mucosa in endometriosis; to secure bits of tissue for diagnostic purposes in suspected cancer of the body; to remove portions of the ovum incompletely cast off, and selective matter after childbirth; and to clean out the broken-down tissue of a cancerous cervix where the disease has progressed beyond hope of a radical cure.”
This curette is a bit unique in that it can be attached to water syringe or other irrigation tools, allowing water (or other fluids) to run out the end. Kind of like a water pick used at the dentists office for irrigating your mouth.
