Antique circa 1880 Saks & Co Clothiers ceramic paperweight. Very rare and highly collectible piece of advertising. Before Saks was “Saks Fifth Avenue,” the store existed in its place of origin; Washington DC. Founded in 1867, it wasn’t until 1924 that the store moved to New York and changed its name.
This paperweight is from the earliest days of the Saks legacy.
A hand in off white ceramic reads “HANDS OFF! PRIVATE PAPERS” while the sleeve, which matches the black of the rest of the piece, reads “VISIT SAKS & CO CLOTHIERS”.
Truly an exceptional piece of early retail history dating back to the glory days of department store shopping, which became all the rage in post-Civil War America.
Condition: Some minor cracking to two fingers and part of hand. Overall wear but in incredibly good condition given the material and age.
