Up for auction is an ANTIQUE BRASS BLEEDER FLEAM with 3 folding blades in different sizes in a brass case and marked Boswick as the manufacturer.
The condition of the bleeder fleam is very good considering it’s almost 200 years old . The 3 blades has pitting but the patina is good . The brass casing for the bleeder is in excellent condition .
This Boswick fleam bleeder would be a fantastic addition to the collector of antigue medical instruments.
Historical notes on the use of bloodletting or phlebotomy instruments for the treatment of diseases in the 18 th and 19 th century. Even though bloodletting dates back to antiquity it became an accepted form of treatment during this time period Everthing from fever, madness to anemia and debility etc. used bloodletting as a form of treatment to the patients symptoms which it did not almost never benefited the patient . The forms of instruments & methods used for bloodletting were: (1) The Lancet (2) Fleam ( 3 ) The Spring Lancet ( 4 ) The Scarifcator ( 5 ) Cupping ( 6 ) Leeches .
It should be noted during the American Civil War , bloodletting still was an accepted form of treatment & each regiment was issued a spring lancet or scarificator to the surgeons supply list . As the war waged on use of bloodletting was rarely used or abandoned by the doctors.
