    Description

Two sake cups from the same shop in Hiroshima with one dated 1937.(Showa 12)
    This was the
    beginning
of Japan's war in China after the Marco Polo incident in July of 1937.
    (The China Incident)
For Japan, fighting in China was called "The Second Sino Japanese War" The first one being when Japan attacked China in 1894 - 1895.
(See our other sake cup on ebay dating from this war)
Japan's fighting in the Pacific was called "The Pacific - Asia War" in Japan.
These two sake cups are made with multiple coats of Japanese lacquer over hand turned wood. The designs are done with gold and silver.
Powdered gold (makie) was mixed with lacquer and painted on the smaller cup. The larger cup was done with silver.
They both come with their original paulownia wood boxes.
The notes in the last photos were written by my Japanese wife.
